Did anyone else notice the apparent lack of a search icon next to the homescreen page indicator?

It does kinda remind me of this: http://www.macrumors.com/2011/04/19/video-of-64-gb-white-iphone-4-running-old-test-ios-4-build-with-expose/

This was proven to be an older build of iOS4 though, so I'm not sure what to make out of it. :/

iCal is awesome. Looks great; works great even in full screen mode.

The only issue is that in week view, the fonts are not properly anti-aliased.

I think Apple should have chosen Lucida Grande as a consistent font across the OS. iCal + Lucida Grande is much better than iCal + Helvetica which looks crap.

They need to get rid of Helvetica for Lion and other apps. PLEASE.

Yes, if my Xbox was stolen, I'd definitely want it back -- probably enough so that I wouldn't care what MS did on my behalf. But as it didn't happen to me, I can be more rational about this.

I don't think MS should give out this information to end customers. It would create way too many loopholes and all XBox Live user's privacy would potentially be compromised. Now if cops were to call MS and say "We're investigating a stolen XBox," that id tracking system you described comes in very handy.

Depends on your business but I get what your saying. Apple announces in January, this gives time for people to save and create hype over the white model.

Cloud computing is gonna be huge in 15 years or so. After some point we won't have CPU's at all, all the computation will be done in cloud and we'll just have inputs at home, like a keyboard and mouse or touch, and a screen. Many things will change, and the closed app store will be the least of your worries by then.

Back to Mainframe? He he, not gonna happen. Well, maybe in 100 years from now.

As far as "Cloud" is concerned: meh, another hype which will ether die out by itself or be killed by inevitable major security breach (Hello PSN)

So don't dismiss this, it's Page 1 worthy, but it's also not more than 50% likely, as it would be if this was AppleInsider we were talking about.

Have any of you negative commenters ever owned an iPhone or even seen an iAd? If not, please reserve your comments.

These aren't just tiny micro banners/advertisements. Those are just the teaser into viewing the full screen iAd and actually, some of them are fairly creative in their implementation. Most are fairly interactive and none of the iAds take you out of the current App your using just to view it (like the old AdMob ads would do). There may be some that allow you to email a coupon to yourself, but I haven't come across any yet.

Long story short, if you don't like ads, don't download free apps that are ad supported or (here's a clever idea) DON'T CLICK ON THE AD. Otherwise, just keep your useless and/or 'clever' comments to yourselves unless you actually know what your talking about.

That's exactly what we do, that's why we think THIS is a pile of ****

Your ignorance related to trans issues is really showing here. I suggest you do a little research on this topic next time around.

She is a woman plain and simple, what is or isn't between her legs does not matter one bit IMO.

Really? That doesn't matter? Well then why don't we have men compete in all the women's events at the Olympics? Oh wait, it does matter

I'm not defending the attackers. I think it was terrible. Horrifying video. It's hard to believe people are like this.

I do think this whole "biology doesn't matter, it's how you feel in your heart" nonsense is obviously nonsense.

He has every right to dress like a girl. I don't even mind if he uses a female bathoom. But those things don't make someone female. The characteristics that allow doctors to assign genders to new-borns do not change as people get older.

"In college, I built small TV jammers. I'd go to the one dorm that had a color TV, sit in the back, in the dark, and tune in my jammer. The screen got messed up, not totally but enough to bother everyone. Without any plan, a friend in the front row, who knew what was going on (I hope he did) whacked the TV. I instantly turned the jammer off and the TV worked fine."

New investments in technologies and products would be by far the best use of the money. With Apple's cash, they could set up a research arm similar to Xerox PARC or the old Bell Labs and place themselves in the forefront of new technology for a long time. Instead, they seem to be notably stingy with their R&D dollars. Purchasing technologies by buying out smaller companies could also be advantageous, and Apple does do some of this, but not much -- not enough to make even a dent in their cash hoard.

I'm not so sure that Apple needs to re-invent the wheel all the time. It seems to me that Apple is (historically) pretty good at introducing new features, long before other PC manufacturers.

While I agree that a dedicated research arm could, in the long term, create a lot of great, innovative products and technologies, I think they have the possibility, if not properly run, to become cash cows that produce little or nothing of any profit-making value. Researchers have a way of remaining focused on research, not profits.

I still think that buying up other small, but influential companies such as Digidesign would be a great thing for Apple. Think of all the products that Apple currently sells that were bought, rather than developed in-house:

    iTunes
    Final Cut Pro
    Shake
    Logic (and, by extension, Garageband)
    LiveType

Heck, even MacOS X was, in many ways, 'bought' rather than developed by Apple.

Collective bargaining is a legislative privilege granted by friendly law makers in some localities which can be quickly and abruptly eliminated (as you've all just observed.)
How? Without the union, bad teachers would presumably be fired, but how would this raise wages directly or indirectly?

There are a million ways to increase the wages of good teachers. Make the system operate like any good business where the quality employees get promoted and the worthless employees get fired to make room for new ones. Look at the system that was attempted in D.C. which would have allowed teachers to OPT IN to a system which would measure them based on performance for the opportunity to get double the salary, or stay in their current situation. The union (even though there was no down-side) wouldn't even vote on the proposal so that they could maintain the status quo and prevent management from making changes to improve the school system. Who loses out in the end? Students and taxpayers.

Firing incompetent teachers sounds like a great idea, but it doesn't require unions to be disbanded to achieve. The British teachers unions aren't that strong, and still we have huge problems getting rid of poor teachers.

Jail time for strikers is bizarre and totally unacceptable.

Additionally there is no way you can claim that it is a "individual liberty" position to hold to be for jailing strikers.

    Unfortunately, it does.
I think public unions should not exist, so there should be no concern of fines or jail time for striking public-sector unions.

I'm sorry, but I just have to smile at some of this. It manages to be self-contradictory and over the top, all in just nine words. I could almost see you waving your pom-pons while you wrote it.

Sorry, but you guys are self-destructing, and while it's painful to watch what you're doing to the economy and to good, hard-working people, at least we're seeing you implode in ways far greater than we'd ever dreamed. Keep watching those polls. You're doing everything you can to help the Democrats in 2012.

Oh, and please stop getting tea stains all over my flag.

Keep talking Veil, 2010 was just the 'coming attractions.'

Ahh, but if it is OK for the Republican Party to "sweep the states clean" you better keep your mouth shut when their actions here result in Democratic majorities and we sweep collective bargaining into a national right and make collective bargaining a far easier thing to obtain and make it a criminal act for any business or business owner to interfer with employees rights to organize unions. You're using your "friendly lawmakers" to launch a sneak attack on unions. Don't be surprised when this bites you in the butt.

(edit) In case anyone thinks I have said anything mean about FP's wife, keep in mind the only thing I know about her is that she's a teacher in a union.

Just proves you know nothing about my wife. Proudly, she's not in the union.
BTW, public employees do not have the RIGHT to unionize. As stated before, it was made temporarily legal by union-friendly legislators. This gift can be taken away at any time. It's not a right. I'm sorry you don't realize this FACT.

So why is your wife part of the Union? Why doesn't she listen to your wise ideas and go make more money in a private school? If she's really a good teacher then she should be able to according to your logic.

She isn't. In addition to teaching at a public school, she also teaches at several fine private graduate level universities. Also, she's making tremendous progress on several entrepreneurial ventures as well. She's the type of person any organization would be incredibly lucky to have... smart, hard working and passionate. She loves teaching, but unfortunately to leave your career exclusively up to the public school system and the union atmosphere would mean that even after 20 years of incredibly hard work you'd still be getting paid as the horrible lazy teacher next door who'd only similarity to you is the fact that they've been there for the same 20 years. What a joke. That's why real professionals, talented individuals with a ton to offer, rarely stay exclusively in teaching for their entire career. There's no future in it. The unions have caused this... their undying focus on 'fairness', their unwillingness to allow the firing of bad teachers, and and their focus on compensation based on longevity are all working together to kill our school systems, that much is certain.

No, when Apple revealed the iPhone most people were thinking something along the line of "Apple seriously need to reconsider leaving out 3G and the ability to install software if they want to make it in the smart phone business", a phone that doesn't let you install new software is by definiton not a smart phone. The iPhone 3G was the real deal, ofcourse the first gen was successful, simply because it was Apple, but the 3G was when it turned into a good product and soared in popularity.
And iPhone is far from the first icon based phone and I personally believe the Sony Ericsson P800 and P900 was a big inspiration for iPhone.

It still hurts you, isn't it? When it's Apple that re-invent the phone.
Goes on. Keep denying pal. Let us know how hurt you are. Pundits out there all accepted what iPhone did to the industry. Only bitter person like you can not accept that.

I find this whole "Apple invented the smartphone" argument amusing.

Awesome, to make enough time for this lets just forget everything after the Great Depression because it's not like that junk matters as much as gays being persecuted. Seriously, the Holocaust and the Rape of Nanjing are totally trivial events compared to the Stonewall riots. We should totally drop coverage of the bombing of Pearl Harbor to make room for a lecture on how NAMBLA doesn't represent gays. To top it off we should ditch the civil rights movement in favor of the White Night riots!

 there is no time available to teach this, if we teach this something else gets whacked. As is we get to the 1930s by the tests which go to the 1980s...

Let me give you a REAL scenario. I used to use my laptop backpack to carry my lunch to work and I was at the airport heading out of town. What I didn't know is that one of my butter knives had slid down under the lining of the backpack. Of course I went in security and was pulled to the side where I was professionally patted down. They then pulled me off to the side to further inspect the bag. I told them the story and they allowed me to slip it in an envelope to mail it home.

    1. It worked as they did catch a potential weapon.
    2. They were profesional about it the entire time (Boston TSA).
    3. If you cooperate with them it is generally no big deal.

People that are making this difficult simply like to complain for the sake of complaining. Take the bus....
