It's amazing just how few (3 so far that I can count) SERIOUS and thoughtful replies to this thread there have been. It almost seems that without personal attacks or social distress we have nothing to talk about... even when faced with the amazingly detrimental economic situation described in the OP. Truly fascinating. Seems more true to me than ever that most on the left either A) fail to recognize the depth and seriousness of the problem at hand, B) don't care or aren't willing to make the necessary cuts to maintain economic sanity, C) are too busy playing petty politics (the blame game) worrying about who caused the problem instead of who's going to fix it. It seems that unless the threads directly pit right vs. left, no one cares enough to engage intellectually and make progress towards a solution. Anyway, thanks to the posters above who actually contributed... I may not agree with your suggestions, but at least your in the arena.
The trouble is in true authoritarian style you present charts from various right wing/big business sources (complete with oversize type and charts, which as you know is the equivalent of shouting, not the best way to start a discussion) and present them as "truth" thereby establishing your own rules,no room for any debate on options. What the U.S. is going through is "end of empire" get used to it and adapt or die.The giant Ponzi scheme that is international capitalism doesn't care about the majority of Americans one way or another.Face it the way America is organised is failing the vast majority's income has been stagnant since Reagan, exploiting others natural resources is getting harder. The U.S. is split,a wealthy few percent control the wealth the rest are awaking to the fact that this is a model for failure and will as time passes become more demanding of change,it may not happen soon but it will happen.Maybe then the U.S. will fulfil the possibilities it has always had.
(in case I'm not being clear, the present model is dead it doesn't work no amount of tinkering will fix it,what is needed is a new model)

I think we should try to keep the software listed here just to whats flat-out free. Perhaps if someone wants, we can start a second thread to the tune of Not Exactly Free, But Worth It! Software. As a general rule, any software with a trial period isnt free, so we should probably keep it out of this thread in order to keep with the threads theme. (And BTW this isnt directed at anyone in particular.)
So lets keep it up, guys! What other free software you do like? :)
Fair enough. The easiest way to do this would be to have the thread description changed to, "best Freeware,".

I called the Applestore before ordering and was told it shipped with the new headphones. I'm going to complain if it comes with the old ones because that is the excuse I used to justify ordering the Shuffle. I had just recieved a Nano as a gift the month before but wanted to upgrade the buds.
I just called Apple (after recieveing my old-style earbuds with my shuffle) and the rep told me that the orginal plan was to ship them with the new style buds, but that "Apple changed it's mind about this" and decided last week to ship then with the old-style ones.
I was like what the hell - thanks for telling those of us that preordered that we would be getting the same crappy headphones that I already have 5 pairs of....

I am not defending Full of Win. I sincerely am not.
But some people should keep in mind that it's entirely possible to love a company's products while not liking part or all of the actual company or how they operate on given occasions.
It's very easy for some here to just throw out the term troll and hater just because someone isn't accepting of Apple's PR, etc.
Now go ahead an tag this with your "-1" too :)

I know in 10.4 you can enable the machine as an xgrid client. Can you run the server portion in 10.4 or do you have to have the 10.4 server?
According to this macosxhints article (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050610040807931) you can with a bit of tweaking and some free apple server app downloads.

Cool. You're giving me some ideas for next month's desktop:). Great use of Nocturne, too.
Thanks, my inspiration came from here (http://rjd2k3.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d1qvc81)... It'd be cool to see what you come up with.
BTW, I'm not using Nocturne--I hacked my menu bar a while ago, before it was released, using a method someone suggested on these boards.

Hey Guys,
Sorry if this is the wrong spot for this, everyone probably already has a gmail account, but if you need one just reply to the thread or pm me.
Thought this might be helpful, took me ages to get an Gmail invite.
Cheers,
Wilson.

Turn your EQ into a smile, remove all the mids and boost the tops and bass for that (rather horrid) crunchy, digital sounding distortion.
Sorry, not a fan of that sort of guitar sound really, it always sounds too processed and a little 'phoney', if that's the right way to describe it.
Good luck with the project though, it's always nice to hear people getting into audio work :)

I went cartoony this month. I'm cycling through about 10 off David Lanham's (http://dlanham.com/art/threadtroll/) site.
I discovered him through an article (http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/07/geek-artist-making-50-caricatures-over-facetime-4/) about his awesome Facetime sketches. Too bad he is booked until next year :( I really want one.

Yes, because the hardware manufactured decided to use "GB" for Gibibyte instead of gigabyte. But since all memory (hardrives, ram) are in base 2, 2^30 = 1GB is correct.
Sorry, that's wrong. From Apple's website:
1GB = 1 billion bytes; actual formatted capacity less. Song capacity is based on 4 minutes per song and 128-Kbps AAC encoding; actual capacity varies by content.
The "actual formatted capacity less" bit there is because computers read memory in 2^x formats, as you mentioned Gibibytes (GiB), Mebibytes (MiB), Kibibytes (KiB), etc., whereas manufactures spec memory (with the exception of RAM, I believe) in 10^x formats, or Gigabytes (GB), Megabytes (MB), Kilobytes (KB), etc. So, 1 GB=0.93 GiB. However, of course, most of the public doesn't understand GiB, so computers just report this as GB. So, finally, the "formatted" capacity of the 1 GB Shuffle, if you ask the Finder, is 0.931 GB, or 953.7 MB.
