Indeed, it's an odd juxtaposition. In order to not appear to be hypocrites on their budget reform, some Republicans may have to backtrack on all the moral rhetoric they use to defend the death penalty.

If we are in such dire straits that we need to cut unions' collective bargaining in order to balance the budget, why should we need to spend tens of millions of dollars killing prisoners?

    MattG,
Regarding your item #1. Notes is this way because of SECURITY. When an ID is created it contains encryption keys. This is what allows it to communicate with the notes server and also secure data. IF the user chooses to encrypt their data, like e-mail, then without that ID the data is safe. End of discussion. Even the administrator can't get to it. Notes is a highly secure envoirnment. You don't hear stories or people hacking the notes server, or getting spyware, or any of that Exchange business...
Security is the opposite of convenience. Now if the user in question did NOT take advantage of encrypting data then your notes "fangirl" could have simply deleted the user from the address book, created the user again with the same name and it would have worked fine which is what she ended up doing.. The reason why the name change caused a problem is because the backup ID wasn't updated at the same time - which is ok at long as you store your history of changes in the admin4 database. That change was probably very old and purged from the database. Regarding ID's what some companies do - mine included is store all the users ID's with a default password in a secure place - give the users copies and force them to change their password. Obviously there's a huge problem with this. Whoever stores these ID's has the keys to the kingdom - including being able to get to encrypted information. We chose to add some convenience at the cost of security in this case. Certainly the user did NOTHING wrong! One way or the other it should have been a 15 minute fix.
Sorry, but that's just stupid (not what you said, but the fact that it's like that). If you've got the enviroment setup correctly, then it's already secure and only the administrator should be able to log in as one and regenerate an ID anyway. If it's setup securely, then I'm the only one who should have access to it, and I should be able to do it. Period. It doesn't need to be so secure that the administrator can't administrate.

Also there is a built in method for password recovey of notes id file - but I'm more a developer so I haven't messed with that. It does need to be setup ahead of time I think.
We've tried to make this work a number of times and have been unsuccessful. Again, this should be an easy thing to do. All of the security-overkill that Domino turns on by default should be optional. If this were a government agency, it'd be one thing. We're a small private college. Our email server should be secure but it doesn't have to be Fort Knox. I should be able to change a password as an administrator more easily.

Regarding item 3. You can easily see who's accessing a domino server by using the notes log (log.nsf). Wether it's the client or browser all access is recorded. Look under usage by user. Only the people who are using the sever will show up in this list. Typically data is only stored for 5-6 days but this can be changed. You can also go into any database and via the property screen get all the activity detail from there.

Again, this does not show accesses via iNotes. When I list by user, it only shows the people accessing using Notes IDs and the Notes client, which is our administrators, not students. See the attached picture...there's 7 users listed there, and they are all admins and servers. I need to see accesses via iNotes. And, I need to go back a year, so even if this method did work we'd be talking thousands of accounts that I need to get last-opened dates on. Looking it up this way would be tedious. I need to export a list and this information simply does not exist.
Regarding your specific need. You should be able to get a pretty good idea of the last login time of a user in the person documents last updated field. I think that's updated daily.
The 'last updated' field shows when the person doc was last updated by an Administrator. I tried that already...believe me.

I know Notes/Domino has a lot of upsides, but in my opinion, the difficulty of doing simple tasks as mentioned above makes the bad outweigh the good.

I have one of the newer mac mini's (server) with the HDMI out port on it. I am using the machine as a home theatre pc.

Friday night I rented a HD movie from Itunes and attempted to play it on my 50 inch plasma. I received the message that my display is not HDCP compliant and that I could not play the vidoe.

I looked up the specs on my Samsung PN50A650 and found the following statement about HDCP that states the display is HDCP compatible. The only other issue that may come into play, was that I had my EyeTV HD recorded plugged in at the time, I disconnected the device, but the video still did not play.

Does anyone know why I can not display the HDCP media? Is there a test file I can use for troubleshooting since the rental has expired? (Apple refunded my money by the way)

    What is HDMI?
HDMI, or high-definition multimedia interface, is an interface that enables the
transmission of digital audio and video signals using a single cable.
The difference between HDMI and DVI is that the HDMI device is smaller in size and
has the HDCP (High Bandwidth Digital Copy Protection) coding feature installed.
➢ Each DVD Player or Cable Box / Satellite receiver (Set-Top Box) has a different
    back panel configuration.
➢ The TV may not output sound and pictures may be displayed with abnormal color
when DVD Player or Cable Box / Satellite receivers supporting HDMI versions
older than 1.3 are connected. When connecting an older HDMI cable and there
is no sound, connect the HDMI cable to the HDMI IN 2 jack and the audio cables
to the DVI IN (HDMI2) [R-AUDIO-L] jacks on the back of the TV. If this happens,
contact the company that provided the DVD Player or Cable Box / Satellite receiver
to confirm the HDMI version, then request an upgrade.
➢ HDMI cables that are not 1.3 may cause annoying flicker or no screen display.

You are obviously missing the point. Apple's new subscription model is preventing choice from coming to it's customers. How is that not a bad thing?

Apple's new subscription model is preventing publishers from selling our / your private information to advertisers / spammers.

If publishers want to make money and thrive they should do it by earning it and producing quality content, not by selling our private information to third parties.

I'm not saying the FT isn't a quality publisher, just saying this applies to all publishers in general.

Oh silly gays when will you learn. ;)but yeah if a white person called me a n word i'd be mad so the same applies here. I'd be pissed if someone called me a bundle of stocks. :D

If a white person called you the N word, you should be examining your tolerance in their ignorance as well as their ignorance. You shouldn't be so quick to react, because they are looking for that reaction out of you; that is why they call you it. It could be said that you are living up to the slur that you are being called.

Disclaimer: I'm also Black. I don't let the word get to me because it empowers them if I show any reaction to it that doesn't benefit me.

Back on topic though.. the F word.. what were to happen if you were overseas (the UK, for example), and someone uses the F word while drawing a puff from the Camel or Marlboro in their mouth. Would you be so quick to judge and react then?

The Golf GTD is brilliant... I think it's a better everyday car than the GTI, I test drove one (no intention of buying, but something to do on a Sunday afternoon) and its in-gear performance is proper... And it's far more sophisticated looking than the GTI too.

That said, it's a shame that VW haven't launched a Polo GTD... yet, IMHO the Polo GTI is the true spiritual successor to the MK I Golf GTI, more compact, lighter with an absolute peach of an engine... a GTD would offer comparable performance, but with extraordinary fuel efficiency. The Polo's better looking too... ;)

If the GTD was available in North America, it would be my first choice for a new car. I think the GTD is the kind of car I've been waiting for someone to build for years. Too bad it will never, ever come here. :(

I agree with you on the Polo. Frankly VW could really hit the ground running in the small car race here in the states if they federalized the Polo. It's fuel economy numbers would compete well with the hybrids, and it's simpler and cheaper. But, as I posted at the beginning of this thread, VW's strategy is focused in a totally different direction. VW seems to be gambling that the small car/hybrid craze in the US is a short-term fad, and that once the economy improves people will go back to wanting big, cheap cars. That's especially depressing considering that VW is the only manufacturer in the US who sells reasonably priced diesel cars, and one of the few (the only?) that has always kept a small hatch in the lineup.

I simply don't agree with this at all. You're basically saying that the Altima's 4 banger is inefficient which couldn't be further from the truth. I can drive to Phoenix, AZ from San Diego, CA - a distance of ~500 miles - on half a tank.

Frankly I'm skeptical. I owned a 1999 Altima GXE with a manual transmition. Great great car for what it was. I'd still be driving it if some drunken moron in a truck hadn't totaled it. Anyways, my Altima was equipped with a different engine (KA24DE 4-cylinder, 2.4L) but was about the same size as your engine. It weighed slightly less, about 250lbs or so. Under normal driving conditions I could manage 30-31mpg combined cycle. On the highway, if I kept the speed down, I could do 35mpg (my best numbers were from a 360 mile trip @60mph - 39.5mpg). I had a 15.9 gallon tank, which meant I could get just about 500 miles on a tank of gas (I was brave once and drove 492 miles on one tank before I chickened out).

I don't know which year Altima you have, but you have a 20 gallon fuel tank and depending on what year, your EPA mileage is between 20-23 city and 27-32 highway. I'll grant you the 32mpg number because my Altima did better than the EPA numbers. 32mpg will get you 320 miles on half a tank. Heck, I'll even give you my best 39.5mpg number - but that still only gets you 395 miles on half a tank. In order to go 500 miles on half a tank of gas, you'd have to be getting 50mpg. And I don't believe that. I don't know of a single gasoline-powered car that can go 1000 miles on one full tank.

The Altima's engine is not particularly inefficient, but the car weighs 3000lbs. A smaller car with a smaller engine has the potential to get better fuel economy.

I don't call that inefficient at all, especially since I know for a fact that a Prius can't do that. Also the Versa's engine is a 2.0 which should be less powerful but in theory more efficient than the Altima, except for aerodynamics. It's just not. The only advantage the Versa has over the Altima is the interior roof trim - it really does cut wind noise better than the Altima. Beyond that, the Versa is an overpriced piece of crap, quite frankly.

I've never driven one, so I can't say one way or the other. It's 400+lbs lighter than the Altima, probably less aerodynamic, and the 1.8L engine has 50ish less horsepower.

But it's not all small cars in the US that suck. Honda and Acura have been making efficient small cars for years. I don't agree that the small car market is ignored - rather, it's not focused on. Diesel, in my opinion, is a failed market out here. Great concept, but there just isn't enough steam behind it. I applaud Volkswagen for trying. But the reality is that everyone has it wrong. The answer isn't petrol because it's limited, it isn't electric because capacity is at a premium, and it isn't hybrid because the cost is prohibitive. The answer lies in the very thing that surrounds us constantly. I'm afraid I just won't be alive to see people realize it.

The thing is, diesel isn't just a great concept - it's every bit as proven as gasoline-engined cars. It's been in use for over 100 years.

Buy the way, the 2007 Civic's real-world mileage is no better than my 1999 Altima's was, so I don't think Honda has a lockdown on fuel economy. I find it odd that you don't seem to think size has any effect on fuel economy. Some small cars are probably less efficient than they could be, but a larger car is always going to be potentially less efficient.

That depends on the design of the display housing. As Apple currently employs tapering, the bezel will be a bit thicker, though the 17" MBP has a very small bezel already.
Or look at the older MBPs and PowerBooks. It is possible, even 5mm or less is possible, but the tapering has to be taken away or the edge thickness will be thicker.

    One of the patents:
Mobile telephone capable of displaying world time and method for controlling the same

An apparatus and method for calculating and displaying local time for a plurality of cities in the world. The apparatus includes a memory for storing Greenwich mean time (GMT) information for each of the plurality of cities. The apparatus sets a reference time and counts the time that elapses from when the reference time is set. The apparatus calculates a local time of a city selected by a user, which is based on a difference between the GMT of the selected city and the GMT of a present location of the apparatus, the reference time and the counted elapsed time. The reference time may be either a time set by the user or a system time acquired from a signal generated from a remote system.
How can companies get patents for such trivial algorithms???

Just FYI I bolded out the most specific part. You do realize that there are still phones not capable of setting the time remotely? I still use an old Nokia phone that has no automatic time syncing.

Either you really think it's a trivial implementation to acquire a time-signal over the cell network or you just haven't grasped the concept of the patent.

And btw: How can a company hold a patent for a swipe gesture to unlock the screen? How is that more sophisticated.

weren't there other rumors regarding an "os x lite" edition earlier in the year?

I think the consensus is that Apple abandoned the idea of building a phone completely from the ground up, which was their original idea. The question is *what* exactly they abandoned. At some level it makes sense for them to use Symbian or some other existing OS in order to get the benefit of 3rd party app availability.

Then again, that rather un-Apple like, since I would think Apple would want to have total control over the interface. Maybe Apple *will* come up with a real-time "OS X Lite" operating system, and the 3rd party apps will have to be Java apps, basically. If Apple makes sure that Java performs well on the iPhone then that would be their best strategy...

It's been a while since I've posted but I think I've got one worthy this month :D

    http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4148/5080911417_7eb6e59648_z.jpg (http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4148/5080911417_7eb6e59648_b.jpg)

And just in case the link breaks you can find it on my Flickr page here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/edriddle/5080911417/).

The name of this piece is called "The Usual Scum" and it was drawn by the very talented Otis Frampton (http://otisframpton.com/) for me so it's not available for download in it's full size, an amazing 4200x2914. It is of course a take off of the movie poster for "The Usual Suspects".

    http://www.gsdvds.com/suspects.gif

For those interested, Otis draws these live via Ustream and then posts them for later viewing. You can watch him draw this one here (http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/9558615). Also, if you've never been in a live Ustream before he's talking to the folks that are chatting with him via text, he's not talking to himself :).
